Why choose private lessons?
There are many courses of self-study to be found on the web and in music stores. However, there is no substitute for learning under the guidance of an experienced teacher. If you are considering self-study, I strongly urge you to try a lesson with a private teacher before committing to either method. I’m confident that you will be convinced after the first lesson!
There are many benefits to private lessons, which include:
* A private teacher gives a more personal approach to learning music.
* A private teacher develops an awareness of the student’s unique personality and can therefore assign the correct repertoire and technical exercises that are appropriate for the student emotionally as well as physically.
* A private teacher has the knowledge to draw from when it comes to finding just the right pieces (songs) and technical exercises for the student.
* A private teacher has experience that will benefit the student in choosing correct fingerings and the correct pieces to move the student ahead properly.
* A private teacher can help with interpretation of the music, presenting it as an emotional language to be presented in a meaningful fashion.
* A private teacher refines musical abilities of the student because he knows the student and can therefore help the student to refine his/her musical ideas.
* A private teacher helps by sharing an awareness and joy of music and will therefore be a great motivator
* A private teacher helps the student with presentation of music in front of an audience, whether in a recital or in front of friends or relatives at home.

Do you offer recitals?
Each year in June we have a wonderful recital at the United Methodist Church of Sea Cliff which features a Steinway concert grand piano. The recital is for all ages and levels. It is student friendly and not meant to be competitive, but simply an opportunity to gain experience in performance.
We have lovely flowers and programs to take home as a remembrance, as well as trophies for each participant.
We divide the recital into shorter sections so that our students don’t have to spend hours and hours there. They may observe the 20 or so students performing in their section and then leave.
I am a beginner. How long will it take before I can play?
This depends on how much you practice, but if you practice 20 minutes a day 7 days a week for a few months, you’ll be able to play some nice tunes for the enjoyment of yourself and others.
How do I know if I or my child has talent?
Talent varies from student to student. It is a complicated topic as there are so many facets to music, and one student may excel at one facet but not another. If you yearn to play a specific instrument or if you love to sing, then that is a sure sign. If you observe that your child is drawn to the piano or other instrument or if s/he loves to sing, then that is also a sign. If there is a desire to learn then most likely there is talent.
Do you prepare students for NYSSMA and college auditions?
Yes. Our teachers have experience in preparation both for NYSSMA and for College auditions.
What level of music do you teach?
We teach all levels from pre-reading to concert.
What styles of music do you teach?
We teach classical, jazz, and popular music including Broadway.
Do we have the same teacher every week?
Yes. Your teacher will not change unless you request a new teacher.
Do you allow your students study on electronic instruments?
Yes. Often it is more economical for our students to begin learning on a keyboard rather than a piano. We also teach electric and bass guitar.
When may I start lessons?
You may begin lessons at any time of year.
Do you offer lessons on weekends?
Yes. Many of our teachers are available on weekends.
What about scheduling?
We schedule our lessons to fit your schedule.
Can a young student take a shorter lesson?
Young students may take a 15-20 minute lesson provided it is scheduled in the same home back to back with another student.
What age may students begin lessons?
We accept students at 4 years old.
What is the duration of a lesson?
Lessons are 30, 45, and 60 minutes long.
How often do your students take lessons?
Generally lessons are once per week. If you would like lessons more often, we will provide them.
What is your privacy policy?
We do not release or sell ANY details or student information to third parties under any circumstances. This includes all information provided to us by our students via phone, internet and/or in person.
Do you offer gift certificates?
Yes. You may purchase a block of lessons online or by mail. Your gift is valid for one year after the date of purchase. We will send you a gift letter to give to the recipient.
What should I do if I’d like to refer a friend or relative?
Please call the company with your referral. If your referral commits to 8 lessons then we will give you a free lesson!
Can I have an introductory lesson?
You may have an introductory lesson and if you are unhappy with your teacher, you may have more single lessons with a new teacher until you feel comfortable with your teacher.
How much do lessons cost?
Lesson prices vary according to the teacher and the market. Please contact us about pricing.
Do you have a registration fee?
No. There is no registration fee, but we do take a one lesson refundable deposit to use in the case of an untimely cancellation.
What is the enrollment process?
Simply call us to register, or you can register online at our website. We will contact you to make the necessary arrangements. You may begin lessons the following week.
Are your teachers under contract?
Our teachers are under contract. Any students who come to the teacher as a result of their association with via J entertainment services must study through our company.
Do you give teacher references?
Yes, upon request.
What are your teacher’s backgrounds?
Our teachers vary in background and experience. Most have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in music. Many have graduate and doctoral degrees from the countries finest conservatories.
How do I know the quality of my teacher?
Our teachers are carefully screened for their integrity and experience. We ask questions and more questions. We see how we feel about the teacher. We look for personality, warmth, professionalism and proficiency on their instrument as well as their teaching background and ability to get along with others. We search for a patient teacher who has the desire to make the lessons enjoyable for students of all ages!
